Overview
The Midwest Critical Appraisal Workshop is planned and implemented by specialists in emergency medicine and otolaryngology-head & neck surgery, biostatisticians, and clinical research methodologists. This activity is designed for physicians, clinical researchers, and healthcare professionals and will be of particular interest to residents, fellows, medical students, and other healthcare professionals involved in clinical practice and research. This 6.5-hour course will provide education through keynote addresses, lectures, panel discussions, and interactive sessions. The activity will highlight best practices across critical appraisal methodology, clinical trial design, statistical analysis, data interpretation, and the responsible use of AI tools in medical literature evaluation. The goal of this activity is to enhance knowledge of critical appraisal principles, skills in evaluating clinical research validity and applicability, performance in evidence-based clinical decision-making, and patient care through improved application of research findings to clinical practice.

Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, learners will be able to:

  1. Systematically evaluate the validity of clinical research studies by identifying key methodological strengths and limitations in study design, participant selection, and outcome measurement.
  2. Accurately interpret statistical results in clinical studies, including effect size, confidence intervals, and measures of clinical significance.
  3. Determine the applicability of research findings to their individual patients by assessing population similarity, clinical context, and feasibility of implementation.
  4. Apply the three question critical appraisal framework ("Is this study valid?", "What are the results?", and "Are the results applicable to my patient?") when evaluating published medical literature.
  5. Integrate responsible use of AI tools into their critical appraisal process while maintaining rigorous evaluation standards for evidence based clinical decision making.
