Overview
The 16th Annual Gateway Hospital Medicine Conference: "Care of the Hospitalized Patient" is planned and implemented interprofessionally by adult and pediatric physicians and nurse practitioners (NPs). This conference is designed for hospitalists, subspecialty physicians, and advanced practice providers and may be of interest to physician associates and pharmacists. "Care of the Hospitalized Patient" has been an annual Continuing Medical Education (CME) conference that has grown in popularity and attendance since it began in 2005. Paused during the COVID-19 pandemic, it is now expanded and renewed for healthcare clinicians throughout the Midwest, South, and beyond. This two-day CME course will provide education through evidence-based lectures, case-based interactive presentations, and breakout sessions. The Gateway Hospital Medicine Conference will highlight best practices in the specialty of hospital medicine for adult and pediatric hospitalists and techniques to optimize care for the hospitalized patient. The goal of this activity is to enhance knowledge, skills, and patient care.

Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, learners will be able to:

  1. Apply current, evidence based diagnostic and management strategies for common inpatient medical conditions encountered by hospitalists.
  2. Employ diagnostic stewardship principles to improve clinical decision making and reduce unnecessary testing.
  3. Evaluate the role of emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence, in inpatient clinical practice.
  4. Employ high value care principles to optimize patient outcomes while minimizing unnecessary interventions and resource utilization.
  5. Incorporate recent guideline updates and emerging evidence into the care of hospitalized patients.
  6. Apply patient centered communication and care strategies to address the diverse clinical, psychosocial, and supportive care needs of hospitalized patients.
