Overview

Electrical Impedance Tomography in the Critically Ill Child: A Hands-On Clinical Workshop is planned and implemented by physicians (pediatric intensivists) and respiratory therapists. This activity is designed for pediatric and critical care physicians, respiratory therapists, and may be of interest to nurses, nurse practitioners, pediatric anesthesiologists, pulmonologists, cardiac critical care clinicians, and researchers. This two-day course will provide education through lectures, clinical case presentations, hands-on skills and physiology demonstrations, and question-and-answer sessions.

The activity will highlight best practices in pediatric mechanical ventilation, respiratory monitoring, and regional lung assessment, including the emerging role of EIT. The goal of this activity is to enhance the knowledge, skills, and performance of the interprofessional care team in bedside respiratory monitoring and lung-protective mechanical ventilation, ultimately improving patient care.

Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, learners will be able to:

  1. Explain the basic principles of Electrical Impedance Tomography (EIT), including how regional impedance maps, regions of interest, and endexpiratory lung impedance are generated and what they represent.
  2. Demonstrate acquisition of quality EIT signals at the bedside through correct belt sizing, electrode placement, and troubleshooting of common signal artifacts.
  3. Interpret regional ventilation maps to distinguish normal aeration from atelectasis, overdistension, and regional heterogeneity in critically ill children.
  4. Integrate EITderived regional information with global respiratory parameters to explore individualized, lungprotective ventilation decisions.
  5. Recognize patterns of patientventilator interaction, including asynchrony and pendelluft, using regional monitoring.
  6. Describe the emerging and investigational applications of EIT including lung perfusion and its role during HFOV and ECMO and their current evidence limitations.
