Overview

The 52nd Annual Washington University Kilo Diabetes Symposium is developed and implemented inter-professionally by physicians, nurses, diabetic educators, and pharmacists. This two day person symposium is designed for adult and pediatric endocrinologists, internists, hospitalists, family & general practice physicians, nurses, pharmacists, but will be of interest to nurse practitioners, physician assistants and other health care professionals who care for patients with diabetes. The agenda will focus on the following areas: Updates in Endocrinology, Osteoporosis Hot Topics, Non-insulin Factors that Impact Glucose Levels, Advances in Diabetes Technology, Preventing and Treating Diabetes of all Types, Diabetes in Special Populations and High-Risk Retinopathy, Understanding the Big Picture in Diabetes and Obesity & Management of Incretin Therapy Side Effects. This course intends to provide practical and state-of-the-art information about the diagnosis and management of diabetes and common endocrine disorders that can be implemented across specialties. Diabetes and endocrine diseases require a multi-disciplinary approach for optimal management. This activity is designed with a multi-disciplinary faculty from Washington University School of Medicine and Barnes Jewish Hospital. The intended goal of this activity is increased knowledge, competence and performance to enhance patient care.


Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, learners will be able to:

  1. Develop strategies for screening, evaluation and management of chronic diseases including endocrine cancer syndromes, vascular disease, osteoporosis, diabetes and obesity that spans the duration of the disease and lifetime of the patient.
  2. Improve patient outcomes by comprehensive education that includes diet, exercise and use of diabetes technology to achieve excellent glucose control without hypoglycemia.
  3. Prevent the progression of early type 1 diabetes and type 2 diabetes by implementing appropriate therapies during the critical windows where interventions have been shown to be effective.
  4. Help patients achieve weight loss and diabetes goals to reduce risks of cardiovascular disease, cancer and inflammatory conditions while proactively managing potential side effects of therapy.
