Overview

The Washington University Nerve Course is planned and implemented by peripheral nerve surgeons from the plastic surgery, orthopaedic surgery, and neurological surgery services at Washington University.

This activity is designed for physicians but may also be of interest to residents and fellows, occupational and physical therapists, physician assistants, nurse practitioners and others in the specialty of plastic, orthopedic, neurological and hand surgery including microsurgery. This live course will provide education through lectures, hands-on labs, case presentations, panel discussions, and question & answer sessions. The activity will highlight best practices across plastic, orthopedic, neurological and hand surgery in the treatment of peripheral nerve injuries.

The goal of this activity is to enhance knowledge, skills, strategy, performance, and patient care. The peripheral nerve surgeons from the plastic surgery, orthopaedic surgery, and neurological surgery services at Washington University are internationally recognized as expert surgeons, teachers, and researchers. The proposed multidisciplinary collaboration course is designed to leverage this expertise, leaning heavily on WUSM faculty and alumni to showcase the latest and greatest in peripheral nerve reconstruction.

Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, learners will be able to:

  1. To demonstrate principles of surgery for peripheral nerve reconstruction, including nerve transfers, tendon transfers, and joint arthrodesis.
  2. To establish and execute a treatment plan for patients with peripheral nerve injuries, incorporating basic principles of evaluation, decisionmaking, and surgical technique.
